How to Make Your Own DIY Natural Soothing Paw Wax for Your Dog

We just adopted a sweet 3 month old puppy from the humane society and she was very insistent on licking her feet - upon further inspection, We found a couple of really raw spots on the pads of both back feet. While she napped, I wanted to whip up this DIY paw wax that is amazing for soothing dry, cracked paws - plus is is wonderful for human skin too!

Why use Lavender, Frankincense and Myrrh? All three of these oils are amazing for skin health and also safe for dogs. Lavender, Frankincense, and Myrrh are excellent choices for a Puppy Paw Wax recipe due to their beneficial properties for skin care and soothing effects.

  • Lavender is known for its ability to soothe irritated skin, making it perfect for treating minor skin issues like raw, chapped or cracked paws. It also provides a calming effect which can help relax your pet during application.

  • Frankincense is valued for its ability to calm skin irritations and support healthy skin structure. It has been used historically for its soothing and regenerative properties and can help maintain the health of your pet’s paws. I especially love Frankincense for it's ability to "magnify" the wonderful properties in the oils paired with it.

  • Myrrh comforts the skin around cuts and scrapes, making it a great addition to a paw wax recipe. It helps in soothing and protecting the skin, ensuring that your pet’s paws remain healthy and comfortable.

A couple notes -

Using pure oils is crucial for taking care of your pet (and yourself!) as impure oils can pose risks to both pets and humans. doTERRA essential oils are completely pure and have demonstrated positive effects on pets when applied correctly. Remember to always opt for CPTG® Essential Oils, dilute them adequately, and monitor your pet's reactions to guarantee their safety and health.

Let's get to the recipe -

Measure out 3 oz of beeswax pellets, then add 9 tablespoons of coconut oil. Set your double broiler on top of a pot of boiling water (you may have to add more water as it boils down). Melting beeswax is a slow process, so be patient! Once the beeswax and coconut oil is melted, remove from heat and add in two drops each of Lavender, Frankincense and Myrrh. I like to use a pipette to get the Myrrh out of the bottle as it is a super thick oil. This salve will start to cool and harden pretty quickly. Add to a jar or tins and allow to cool completely before securing the lid.

To use, simply scoop out a small amount and rub a thin layer over your pup's paws. Use in the winter months to help with dry, cracked paws or any time your pup needs some extra paw moisturizing. After applying to our puppy's paws, I like to scoop a little extra out and rub into the back of my hands as well. It is great for dry, or cracked skin on humans too!
