Halloween Monster Cookies

Updated: Sep 29, 2023

I'm not the mom who decks out the mantle for each holiday way in advance. My family is lucky if I get the decorations out the week before. I LOVE baking though so after finding these monster eyes, I knew I had to make some yummy cookies and take some pictures with the Halloween decorations so I could share them with you! The kids will be excited to have cookies and get the chance to decorate the house this evening too!

I thought it would be fun to customize the colors and flavors of these cookies. I have a few super yummy go-to cookie recipes that I love to use around the holidays and one of them is perfect to be able to switch up the essential oils to create different flavors without having to whip up multiple recipes.

Here are some flavor combos to consider:

  • Wild Orange (or Lemon, Tangerine... all of the citrus oils are amazing in baking!)

  • Peppermint or Spearmint

  • Cinnamon + Clove + Ginger which is like a "Pumpkin" spice flavor

  • Cardamom

  • Lavender + Lemon (use fewer drops of Lavender so it's not too floral)

For these cookies, I used Wild Orange essential oil to flavor the orange cookies and 4 drops Cinnamon + 2 drops Clove + 2 drops Ginger to give the purple cookies a Pumpkin Spice flavor.

Basic Recipe (modified from my Snickerdoodle Cookie recipe):

1 cup butter, softened

1½ cup white sugar

2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla

1-2 drops Cinnamon EO

2¾ cups all-purpose flour

2 tsp cream of tarter

1 tsp baking soda

Natural food coloring

8 drops doTERRA essential oils of choice

If you are making snickerdoodles you would then roll the dough into balls and then roll in white sugar by itself or sugar + ground cinnamon. For these Monster Cookies, I found that rolling them in sugar first made the eyes not stick as well so I skipped that and just stuck the eyeballs on top after plopping the dough balls on the baking sheet.

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cream together butter and sugar. Add remaining wet ingredients. In a separate bowl, sift together dry ingredients. Combine wet, dry, and other ingredients. Using a small cookie scoop, grab cookie dough and place on cookie sheet. Add sugar eyes and bake for 10 to 12 minutes.

*Please note that I ONLY recommend doTERRA essential oils for internal use. Make sure your essential oil bottle has a supplemental facts label on it to make sure it is okay for internal use.
